Pleased to Meet You

Tracy Galasso only wanted one thing for her fifth birthday. Patent leather Mary Janes. And for her thirteenth Christmas: A subscription to Elle Decoration. Her favorite movie was Auntie Mame until she saw Moonstruck and never looked back. You can imagine the rest. As a child her parents would hoist her  in the windows of residential construction sites to let them in, so they could  wander around and imagine the plans underway. Her mother was a seamstress ahead of her time, with an infectious laugh, who always wore a hat. Her father, a hopeless romantic salesman, completely gone for his bride. (Boy could they cut a rug.) After two years studying architecture and design, and one wild adventure west, Tracy landed in Atlanta with a BFA in Drawing.  Packing a natural disposition for the particulars of how things fit together, an unfettered love of creative collaboration, and a hyper-verbose visual language, she quickly found home in the weird and wonderful creative community of Georgia’s biggest small town.

Parks Pope, Atlantean born and raised, grew up braised in the gravy of his grandmother's kitchens. He has seen every episode of Bugs Bunny, and once had a hamster named Sid Vicious, and a cat named Amoxicillin. In high school, Parks lettered in both German and Choir, despite his gothic sensibility and cast iron heart. Following a  couple of brief and scandalous career turns, Parks headed west to Las Vegas. Where he garnered not only his French culinary degree but also his Sommelier certification, and a heady love for cocktail making.

You know that old chestnut about two people who met on the internet in 2014? That was Parks and Tracy. He was a little bit Widow Jane bourbon  and she was a little bit Greenbergian painting theory. Ring a ding ding. In 2016, they decided to buy a ramshackle of a house situated on the southwest side of Atlanta, in historic Adair Park. What it lacked in basic decency it made up for in window casings that would make Kelly Wearstler blush. They set forth on a renovation, the beginning of what would later become The 1043.

THE 1043

Despite the most valiant efforts of Atlanta’s most dedicated historian, Paul Simo, little is known about the origin of the house. Based on his research, and using clues in the casements, it was decided that the home was likely erected somewhere in the mid-nineteenth century. Sometime in the 1860’s, is as specific as could be determined. Either the house pre-dated building permits, or any public record of its construction were destroyed when Sherman set Atlanta ablaze.

When Tracy and Parks purchased the house in July of 2015, it had been vacant for decades, and had fallen into a terrible state of decay. They set forth to restoring it to as much of its original historic beauty as possible, garnering the Atlanta Urban Design Commission’s Award of Excellence for Historic Rehabilitation. With great determination and perseverance, they were able to open their doors as a bed and breakfast in late 2017. As guests came and went, another small business was emerging. The house was being booked for photo shoots, small productions and parties. As this side of the business grew, they leaned into it. And by the beginning of 2020 they had formulated a plan to move fully into that side of the business, Well, as I am sure you are aware, 2020 had other plans. With no overnight occupancy, the pair set to making every corner of the house of photographic interest. Painting walls, switching out furniture and styling the space for its new direction. In the spring of 2021 they began the enormous endeavor of overhauling the back yard, taking all of the house’s style and sensibility outside as well. Which brings you up to speed. Here in 2022, we welcome photography, production, small events and elopements. We would love to have you. Welcome to the 1043.
